Knockit privacy policy

This policy explains what the Knockit Chrome extension processes, why it does so, and the choices available to you.

Who operates Knockit

Knockit is operated by Zektek LLC (“Zektek,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). This policy applies to the Knockit browser extension, the supporting embed-resolution service at knockit-embed.zektek.com, and the usage-analytics gateway at extension-event-gateway.zektek.com, and supported-site configuration service at extension-config-gateway.zektek.com.

Information stored in your browser

Knockit stores the following extension preferences:

  • which supported sites you enable or disable;
  • the position of the Knockit button for each site;
  • whether the floating Knockit button is shown;
  • the preferred floating-player window size for each site;
  • whether usage analytics is turned on (on by default);
  • whether local usage statistics are turned on (off by default), plus knock counts and playback time by service and date when enabled; and
  • a randomly generated analytics client identifier, plus a short-lived session identifier that expires after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Site choices, floating-button visibility, button positions, and preferred player sizes use Chrome’s synchronized extension storage and may sync through your Google account if Chrome sync is enabled. The analytics setting, analytics client identifier, local-statistics setting, and local statistics are stored only in Chrome’s local extension storage on each device. The session identifier is stored only in Chrome’s session storage, which clears when the browser closes.

Information processed when you use Knockit

Picture-in-Picture and embed resolution

When a page supports the browser’s native Picture-in-Picture feature, Knockit works with the video on that page and does not send its URL to Zektek’s embed-resolution service.

When an embedded player is needed, Knockit extracts a provider-specific video identifier from the current page URL (for example, a YouTube video ID) and sends that identifier, along with the page’s hostname, to our embed-resolution service. The full page URL is not sent. The service uses that information to request or build a compatible player from the applicable video or audio platform. Successful resolver responses may be cached for up to 24 hours.

Supported-site configuration

Knockit periodically requests a small configuration file from extension-config-gateway.zektek.com. This lets us temporarily disable a supported service when changes to that service prevent Knockit from working correctly. The request does not include page content, browsing URLs, analytics identifiers, or extension preferences.

Limited usage analytics

When enabled, Knockit sends pseudonymous usage events to our own event gateway at extension-event-gateway.zektek.com, along with your analytics client identifier, session identifier, and the extension version. The gateway then forwards these events to Google Analytics on our behalf. Because this forwarding happens server-side, Google receives the event data from our gateway rather than directly from your browser, and does not receive your IP address or browser details through this process.

These events can indicate:

  • that the extension was installed;
  • which supported site was knocked and whether native Picture-in-Picture or an embedded player was used;
  • that the Knockit settings page was opened;
  • that a knock failed and the general reason for the failure;
  • that your enabled-sites selection changed;
  • that you changed the floating-button setting;
  • that you turned local usage statistics on or off; and
  • that you turned usage analytics off.

Knockit never sends the video URL, page hostname, or any page content through these events. You can turn usage analytics off at any time from the Knockit settings page; doing so stops future events and deletes your locally stored analytics client identifier.

Local usage statistics

If you turn on local usage statistics, Knockit records knock counts and playback time by supported service and date. These statistics remain in Chrome’s local extension storage on your device and are not sent to Zektek or any third party. You can turn this feature off or clear its stored statistics from the Knockit settings page.

Why we process this information

We use this information only to:

  • provide the floating player you request;
  • remember your extension settings;
  • understand whether core extension features work; and
  • diagnose failures and improve supported-site behavior.

We do not sell personal information, use Knockit data for targeted advertising, or build profiles of the videos you watch.

Service providers and video platforms

Zektek operates the embed-resolution service, usage-analytics gateway, and supported-site configuration service. The analytics gateway forwards usage events to Google Analytics on our behalf, as described above. SoundCloud and Spotify are audio-only, so Knockit always uses an embedded player for them. For every other supported platform, an embedded player is used only as a fallback when native Picture-in-Picture isn’t available, as described above. When an embedded player is used for YouTube, TikTok, TED, Twitch, or Kick, our embed-resolution service builds the player address itself without contacting that platform; the platform receives a request only when your browser loads the resulting player. When an embedded player is used for Dailymotion, Vimeo, Streamable, SoundCloud, or Spotify, our embed-resolution service also queries that platform’s own oEmbed API on your behalf to obtain the player, in addition to your browser loading the resulting player directly. Each platform’s handling of information is governed by its own privacy policy.

Chrome’s handling of synchronized extension settings is governed by Google’s terms and privacy policy.

Retention and your choices

Resolver responses may remain cached for up to 24 hours. Analytics events are retained according to Zektek’s Google Analytics configuration. Extension preferences, local statistics, the local analytics client identifier, and feature settings remain in browser storage until they are cleared, turned off where applicable, or the extension is removed. The analytics session identifier expires automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity.

You can disable Knockit for individual services, and turn usage analytics and local usage statistics on or off, from the extension’s settings page. You can also clear local statistics at any time. Turning analytics off deletes your locally stored analytics client identifier. You can remove all locally stored extension data by uninstalling Knockit or clearing the extension’s data in Chrome. You can also use the extension without a Zektek account because no account is required.

How we use Chrome permissions

Google requires every Chrome extension to state this plainly: we only use the information Chrome’s APIs give us to provide or improve the features described in this policy. We don’t use it for advertising, and we don’t sell it.

Security and children

We use reasonable technical measures to protect information processed by Knockit. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Knockit is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Knockit changes. We will post the revised policy here and update the effective date above. Material changes will be communicated through the extension or this page when appropriate.
