Cadence privacy policy

This policy explains what the Cadence Chrome extension processes, why it does so, and the choices available to you.

Who operates Cadence

Cadence is operated by Zektek LLC (“Zektek,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). This policy applies to the Cadence browser extension and to extension-api.zektek.com, the Zektek API that our extensions share for usage analytics and supported site configuration.

Information stored in your browser

Cadence stores the following on your device:

  • whether Cadence is enabled, which sites are paced, and the post or minute count you’ve chosen for each;
  • your other settings, such as break position, automatic dismissal, keyboard shortcuts, sluggish scrolling, glitch mode, and intention check;
  • the running count and timing Cadence needs to know when your next break is due, including any active snooze;
  • if you turn on intention check, the short note you type about what you came to a site for, which is replaced when a new session starts;
  • local activity stats, meaning break counts and time spent per site and date, unless you’ve turned that feature off (on by default);
  • if you set an hourly rate, the rate, the currency, your working hours schedule, and time spent during those hours;
  • the list of supported sites we have temporarily switched off, described below;
  • whether usage analytics is turned on (on by default); and
  • a randomly generated analytics client identifier, plus a short session identifier that expires after 30 minutes of inactivity or 24 hours, whichever comes first.

All of this is stored only in Chrome’s local extension storage on each device. The analytics session identifier is stored in Chrome’s session storage, which clears when the browser closes. The timing of your current session on a site is kept in that tab’s session storage, which clears when the tab closes.

Information processed when you use Cadence

Pacing feeds and streams

On supported sites, Cadence counts the posts that load as you scroll and, on video and livestream pages, the minutes a video plays, so it can show its break note at the right time. If you turn on sluggish scrolling or glitch mode, Cadence changes how the page scrolls or looks, also inside your browser. Cadence does not transmit page content, page titles, URLs, or search terms to Zektek or anyone else.

Supported site configuration

Cadence periodically requests a small configuration file from extension-api.zektek.com. This lets us temporarily switch off a supported site when changes to that site stop Cadence from working correctly. The request does not include page content, browsing URLs, analytics identifiers, or extension settings.

Limited usage analytics

When enabled, Cadence sends pseudonymous usage events to extension-api.zektek.com, along with your analytics client identifier, session identifier, and the extension version. The API adds your approximate country, which it determines from your connection, and then forwards these events to PostHog, our analytics provider. Because this forwarding happens on our server, PostHog receives the event data from our API rather than directly from your browser, and does not receive your IP address through this process.

These events can indicate:

  • that the extension was installed;
  • that you used Cadence on a given day;
  • that the Cadence settings page was opened;
  • which settings you changed, by name only, never their values;
  • that you turned local activity stats on or off;
  • that a break was shown for the first time;
  • that snooze was used for the first time;
  • that you turned Cadence off for the first time; and
  • that you turned usage analytics off.

Cadence never sends the domains or URLs you visit, page content, titles, searches, your intention notes, your hourly rate, or any setting’s value through these events. You can turn usage analytics off at any time from Cadence’s settings page; doing so stops future events and deletes your locally stored analytics client identifier.

Uninstall feedback

If you uninstall Cadence, Chrome opens a short, optional feedback page on zektek.com. Nothing is sent unless you choose to submit it.

Why we process this information

We use this information only to:

  • show a break on the sites and at the pace you’ve set;
  • remember your settings and snooze status;
  • show you your own local activity stats and, if you set an hourly rate, what that time costs;
  • switch off a supported site temporarily when it stops working correctly;
  • understand whether core extension features work; and
  • diagnose failures and improve Cadence.

We do not sell personal information, use Cadence data for targeted advertising, or build profiles of the sites you visit.

Service providers

Zektek operates extension-api.zektek.com, the shared API that handles both usage analytics and supported site configuration. It forwards usage events to PostHog, Inc., which stores them in the United States on our behalf, as described above. Cadence requests access to the supported sites solely to pace them and show its break note; it does not run on any other site.

Retention and your choices

Analytics events are retained according to Zektek’s PostHog project settings. Extension settings, intention notes, local activity stats, the local analytics client identifier, and the analytics setting remain in browser storage until they are cleared, turned off where applicable, or the extension is removed. The analytics session identifier expires automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity or 24 hours, whichever comes first.

You can change Cadence’s per site pacing, turn local activity stats or usage analytics on or off, and clear your local stats, all from Cadence’s settings page. Turning analytics off also deletes your locally stored analytics client identifier. You can remove all locally stored extension data by uninstalling Cadence or clearing the extension’s data in Chrome. You can also use Cadence without a Zektek account because no account is required.

How we use Chrome permissions

Google requires every Chrome extension to state this plainly: we only use the information Chrome’s APIs give us to provide or improve the features described in this policy. We don’t use it for advertising, and we don’t sell it.

Security and children

We use reasonable technical measures to protect information processed by Cadence. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Cadence is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Cadence changes. We will post the revised policy here and update the effective date above. Material changes will be communicated through the extension or this page when appropriate.
